Power system performance and resilience

PEER certification helps projects and utilities solve aging infrastructure, find cost savings, build for resiliency, enhance tracking to identify deficiencies and prevent failures, and share best practices. PEER certification enables power system owners and operators to:

  • Reduce climate risk with resilient design
  • Improve energy system performance
  • Demonstrate value to investors

How PEER certification works

PEER can be used for power systems of all sizes – examples of certified projects include leading hospitals, rural cooperatives, city-owned utilities, microgrids and universities. The certification applies to all types of infrastructure, with guidance structured around three core project types:

  • Cities and utilities: public projects with a large variety of customers
  • Campuses: projects with one or more buildings
  • Transit: monorail, metrorail, and intracity or intercity rail projects

Achieving PEER

To achieve PEER certification, a project earns points by adhering to prerequisites and credits that address power system performance across several categories:

  • Reliability and resiliency
  • Energy efficiency and environment
  • Operations, management and safety
  • Grid services
  • Innovation and Exemplary Performance
  • Regional Priority

The PEER Guide to Certification and the PEER Rating System lead project teams through the PEER process and include important information regarding the PEER certification program including the current policies and procedures.
